The ratio of the areas of two similar triangles equals the square of the ratio of corresponding sides, and of corresponding altitudes

Mathematics Sec 1 Term 1, Unit 2, Lesson 3
GoalUse the fact that the ratio of the areas of similar triangles is k² to find areas and sides.
New words
ratio of areas · area of the first ÷ area of the second, for similar figures it is k²corresponding altitudes · the heights drawn to corresponding sides; their ratio is also k
Explanation

When a triangle is enlarged by a factor k, its base becomes k times longer and its height becomes k times longer. The area is ½ × base × height, so it becomes ½ × (k × base) × (k × height) = k² × (the old area). Check with numbers: a triangle with base 6 and height 4 has area 12. Enlarge it with k = 5/2: base 15, height 10, area 75, and 12 × (5/2)² = 12 × 25/4 = 75 ✓. So for similar triangles, area ratio = k², where k is the ratio of any two corresponding sides. The altitudes to corresponding sides are also in the ratio k, because the small right triangles they form are similar. The same holds for corresponding medians and angle bisectors. Warning: the ratio of the areas is k², but the ratio of the perimeters is k. To go from the ratio of areas back to k, take the square root: area ratio 4 : 9 means k = 2 : 3.

Scale factor k (sides)1 : 22 : 33 : 51 : 10
Ratio of areas k²1 : 44 : 99 : 251 : 100
Ratio of perimeters1 : 22 : 33 : 51 : 10
Worked examples
△ABC ~ △DEF and AB : DE = 3 : 5. The area of △ABC is 27 cm². Then area(ABC) : area(DEF) = 9 : 25, so area(DEF) = 27 × 25/9 = 75 cm².
The areas of two similar triangles are in the ratio 16 : 25. Then k = 4 : 5, and the perimeters are in the ratio 4 : 5. If the perimeter of the larger is 50 cm, the smaller has 50 × 4/5 = 40 cm.
Altitudes. Two similar triangles have areas 36 cm² and 100 cm², so k = 6/10 = 3/5. If the altitude of the larger triangle is 15 cm, the corresponding altitude of the smaller is 15 × 3/5 = 9 cm.
Class activity

Grid test. On squared paper draw a right triangle with legs 3 and 4 squares, count its area, then draw the one with legs 6 and 8. How many times bigger is the area? Does it equal k²?
