Telling without words
Discover Term 2: Axis 4, Chapter 3
GoalShow a feeling or an action with my face and body, and copy movements.
New words
mime · to act something without using wordscopy · to do the same movement as someone else
Explanation
We can tell things without words. Our face and our body show feelings and actions. A smile shows we are happy. Wide eyes and an open mouth show we are surprised. We can mime: we act without any sound, and our friends guess. We can also copy movements, such as kicking, running or clapping. Songs can have actions too. With a grown-up, read the song on page 134 of the book. Talk about it: how does it feel, and which movements could you copy?
Worked examples
Mina mimes eating with her hands. Her friends guess: she is eating.
Marwan kicks an invisible ball. Youssef copies him.
We can show a feeling in two ways: with our face and with our body, for example by jumping for joy.
Class activity
Guess my action: with friends, take turns to act something without words or sounds, such as brushing teeth, drinking tea, flying a kite or playing football. The others guess. Then act a feeling: happy, tired or surprised.
