Explanation

A portfolio is a collection of your best work. Today you reflect on Term 1: you think about what you learned and how you changed. Use the list of units to choose four or five points: a digital habit you changed (Unit 1 and 2), a challenge you faced (Unit 3), an art idea (Unit 4), a place you would like to visit (Unit 5), an invention idea (Unit 6) and a rule you keep. Plan a paragraph of about 60 to 80 words (up to 100 if you can): a topic sentence, three or four supporting sentences with because, so or although, one if sentence, and a concluding sentence. Use tenses correctly: the past simple for what you did, the present simple for habits, the present perfect for experiences and a conditional for dreams. Do not write private details. After you write, read your paragraph aloud and tick your self-check list.

Worked examples

Looking back at Term 1, I learned a lot. I changed one digital habit: I now keep my phone away at bedtime, so I sleep better. A challenge I faced was a short talk in class. Although I was nervous, I did not give up. I also enjoy art, and I want to make a clay lamp. If I could visit anywhere, I would go to a rainforest. My rule is to ask before I share a photo.

Read a model paragraph. A grown-up reads it aloud.
Find: a topic sentence (Looking back at Term 1, I learned a lot), a connector (so, although), a conditional (If I could visit anywhere, I would go to a rainforest) and a rule (to ask before I share a photo).
Self-check list. Tick when it is true. (1) I wrote a topic sentence. (2) I used because, so or although. (3) I used one if sentence. (4) I wrote a concluding sentence. (5) I checked my verbs.
Now you. Choose the three points from Term 1 that you are proudest of and say them aloud.
Class activity

Portfolio page. On a sheet of paper write the title Looking back at Term 1 and your paragraph. Add a small drawing for each of three points (a lock for a safe habit, a lamp for an invention, a globe for a place). Show your portfolio to a grown-up and say what you want to do better next term.
