Review: green technology, digital change and systems

ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lessons 1–10: Review
GoalReview green technology, digital change, operating systems, installing and devices with new tasks.
New words
green technology · technology that protects nature, for example by saving energy or waterdigital transformation · moving work and services from paper to digital toolsoperating system · the main program that runs the device and lets other programs workdriver · a small program that lets the system work with a device such as a printer
Explanation

This lesson brings together the first weeks of the term. Green technology protects nature. Digital transformation moves services from paper to digital tools. An operating system runs the device. Install means to put a program on a device from a trusted source. A peripheral is a device attached to the computer, and its driver tells the system how to use it. Plug and Play finds the driver almost by itself. We practise with new tasks: match the idea with its example, put steps in order, and hunt for the error. Check each answer by going back to the idea behind it, not by guessing from the length of the words.

Worked examples

Match: a light that switches on only when someone is in the room matches green technology, because it saves energy. A school that lets pupils hand in homework through a digital form matches digital transformation.
Order the steps of installing a program: get it from a trusted source, run the installer, choose the options and wait, then check that it works.
Order Plug and Play for a new printer: connect it, the system notices it, the system finds the driver, the printer is ready to use. Error hunt: “A driver is a cable.” This is wrong; a driver is a small program.
Class activity

Make a set of eight cards: four ideas from this lesson and four examples. Mix them and let a partner match them. Then write three steps of any process on strips of paper, mix them, and let your partner put them in order.

Practice
1
Match the idea: an online form instead of a paper form. Green technology or digital transformation?
2
Put in order: check it works, run the installer, get it from a trusted source.
3
What does a driver do?
4
Error hunt: “An operating system is only a game.” Correct it.
