Doing and judging: roles, a text, a table, a chart, slides

ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lesson 10: pp. 99–109
GoalDo a project in roles and choose a text, a table with a chart, or slides to show the result.
New words
role · the job that one team member doesteam · a group that works together toward one goalbar chart · a picture where the height of each bar shows a numberslide · one page of a talk, with a short title and a few points or a picture
Explanation

In the “do” stage the team shares the work. Roles can be: a leader who watches the time, a collector who finds the facts, a maker who builds the text, table or slides, and a checker who looks for mistakes and missing credit. Each tool has a job. A word processor writes the report: a title, short paragraphs and a credit line. A spreadsheet holds the numbers in a table and can draw a bar chart from them. A presentation program makes slides: one idea on each slide, with a short title. We draw all three on paper below. Then comes the “evaluate” stage. The team asks four questions. Did we reach the goal? Are the facts right and credited? Was the work shared fairly? What would we improve? Choose the tool that fits the message: words for a report, numbers for a table and chart, and a few points for a talk.

The spreadsheet part of the garden project: a table of three beds and a bar chart made from it. The tallest bar is the beans, with 12. The shortest is the tomatoes, with 5.
SlideWhat it holds
1title and goal
2chart and one sentence
3what we learned and sources
The slides of the garden talk, as three boxes: Slide 1, the title and the goal. Slide 2, the chart and one sentence about it. Slide 3, what we learned and the sources. One idea on each slide.
QuestionAnswer
Goal reached?yes
Credited?yes
Fair roles?rotate next time
Evaluation. Goal reached? Yes. Facts credited? Yes after we added them. Work shared fairly? The checker did less, so next time we rotate roles. Improve: add a photo drawing of each bed.
Class activity

In a team of four, give out the roles: leader, collector, maker, checker. Make a one-page plan on paper for “What is in our classroom?”: a text box, a small table with three invented numbers and a bar chart drawn with a ruler, and three slide boxes. Then evaluate with the four questions.

Practice
1
Name the four roles in the lesson and what each does.
2
Which tool holds numbers and draws a bar chart?
3
How many ideas should one slide hold?
4
In the chart, how many more plants are in the beans than in the tomatoes?
