Wood, forests and the Sun
Discovery Education Science P4: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 84–97
GoalExplain deforestation, and say why solar energy is free, renewable and clean but not always available.
New words
deforestation · the clearing of forests by people, when trees are cut down and not replacedclean energy · energy that makes no smoke and no harmful gases when we use itavailability · whether something can be had when we need it
Explanation
In some villages far from Egypt, families still cook on wood fires. Children carry wood from the forest, and every year the walk gets longer because the nearest trees have been cut down. Cutting down forests faster than they can grow back is called deforestation. When the trees go, animals lose their homes, the soil can be washed away and fewer plants are left for medicines. A different source of energy could help, and the Sun is one. Solar energy is free, because sunshine costs nothing. It is renewable, because the Sun shines every day, and it is clean, because it makes no smoke. It also saves trees. But there are drawbacks. Solar equipment can be expensive. And sunshine is not the same everywhere: it changes with the time of day, the season, clouds and the place on Earth. At night there is none.

Worked examples
village→3 km walk→forest
Malak reads about a girl in a faraway village who walks 3 km to the forest. The round trip is 3 + 3 = 6 km. She does it 5 days a week, so she walks 6 × 5 = 30 km a week just to fetch wood.
more wood is cut→fewer trees→animals lose homes→longer walks
Cause and effect of deforestation. More wood is cut for fires. Then fewer trees stand near the village. Birds and other animals lose their homes. The walk to find wood gets longer.
Seif keeps a pretend record of the hours of strong sunshine in a village in a week. On cloudy Monday and Wednesday there are only a few hours. A solar cooker would work best on Saturday and Tuesday, when there are 8 hours.
Class activity
Cook without wood? In your notebook make two lists about the Sun as an energy source: Good points and Drawbacks. Add one idea of your own to each list. Then decide with a grown-up: on which days this week would a solar cooker work best where you live? Look out of the window and note whether the sky is clear or cloudy, but never look at the Sun.
Practice
1
What is deforestation?
Cutting down forests faster than they grow back.
2
Give one good point and one drawback of solar energy.
Good: free, renewable, clean (any one). Drawback: costly equipment, none at night, less on cloudy days (any one).
3
Look at the bar chart of sunny hours. How many more hours of strong sun were there on Saturday than on Monday?
8 − 3 = 5 hours.
4
Why is wood from forests not a good fuel to rely on for ever?
If trees are cut faster than they grow, the forest disappears and the animals lose their homes.
