Equal groups; Egypt's resources
Equal groups have the same number in each group. Three boxes with four oranges in each box: three times four is twelve. We write 3 × 4 = 12. Now share the twelve oranges into three equal boxes: twelve divided by three is four. We write 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Egypt has many natural resources. A natural resource is something useful that we take from nature, like water from the Nile, sand and rock. Cotton also grows in Egypt, and we make cloth from it.
| Write | Say |
|---|---|
| 3 × 4 = 12 | three times four is twelve |
| 12 ÷ 3 = 4 | twelve divided by three is four |
| 5 × 2 = 10 | five times two is ten |
| 10 ÷ 5 = 2 | ten divided by five is two |
We have 10 biscuits. Let us share them equally in 2 bowls.
How many biscuits are in each bowl?
Ten divided by two is five.
So there are 5 biscuits in each bowl!
Egypt has many natural resources. Farmers take water from the Nile for their plants. We can make glass from sand. Builders use rock to make strong walls. Cotton grows in the fields, and we make cloth from it. We must use water and other resources carefully.
Bean groups. Take 12 beans, buttons or small stones. Make 3 equal groups of 4, then 4 equal groups of 3, then 2 equal groups of 6. Each time, say the multiplication and the division sentence. For example: 4 × 3 = 12 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
