Colors and a scale of 2
Discover Mathematics P2: Term 1, Lessons 2–10
GoalRead a colours graph with a scale of 2 and make a graph of dice sums.
New words
sum · the answer when we adddice · small cubes with dots, used in gamesroll · to throw the dice
Explanation
Here is a graph of the favourite colours of 24 children. The scale goes up by 2, so each bar is an even number: red 6, blue 8, green 4, yellow 2, orange 4. We can also make our own graphs. Roll two dice, add the dots to get the sum, and make a mark above that sum. After many rolls, the sum with the tallest bar is the winner.
Worked examples
How many children like red or blue best? Red is 6 and blue is 8. Add: 6 + 8 = 14 children.
Omar rolls a 3 and a 4. The sum is 3 + 4 = 7. He makes a mark above 7.
Hana rolled two dice 12 times and made this graph. The tallest bar is above 6, so the winning sum is 6. It came 3 times.
Class activity
Play the dice game. Roll two dice 10 times. After each roll add the numbers and make a tally mark for the sum. Which sum won? Try again. Does the same sum win?
