Explanation
In this practical lesson we use two formulas: population density = population ÷ area (people/km²) and urbanisation level = urban population ÷ total population × 100 (%). First bring the data to the same units: if population is in millions and area in thousands of km², it is easiest to convert to 1,000,000 and 1,000 before dividing. Rural population = total population − urban population. When analysing results, link density to natural conditions (plain or desert), economic development and urbanisation. High density is typical of areas with a favourable climate and developed industry; density is low in big countries with harsh climates such as Mongolia, Australia and Canada. Write the conclusion in two sentences: the densest and sparsest country, and the reasons.
Worked examples
Country A: population 90 million, area 300 thousand km². Density = 90,000,000 ÷ 300,000 = 300 people/km².
Country B: total 20 million, 5 million urban. Rural 20 − 5 = 15 million; urbanisation level 5 ÷ 20 × 100 = 25 % – a low level.
Class activity
Work in pairs: one student invents area and population for three imaginary countries; the other calculates the densities and ranks them.
