Measuring acceleration. Free fall
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Velocity of a body falling from rest after 6 s (g = 10 m/s²), m/s?
60
2
Distance fallen from rest in 4 s (g = 10 m/s²), m?
80
3
Which of these is close to free fall: a stone, a parachutist, a sheet of paper?
The stone (from a small height); air resistance is large for the parachutist and the sheet.
4
If g = 10 m/s², by how much does the velocity of a falling body grow each second?
By 10 m/s.
5
At home with an adult, drop a ball from 1 m and time the fall with a phone stopwatch. Compare with t² = 2h/g.
Calculation: t² = 2 · 1 : 10 = 0.2, so t ≈ 0.45 s (0.45 · 0.45 ≈ 0.2); the measurement error can be large.
