The role of physics in society. Physics in Uzbekistan
Textbook, pp. 8–9
GoalExplain the role of physics in the life of society and name institutions that do physics research in Uzbekistan.

Explanation
Ancient people depended entirely on nature: they lived on what they found and hid in caves from rain, cold and predators. Gradually they invented hunting tools and learned to use fire, and life became easier. Knowing the laws of nature freed humanity from freezing, darkness, hunger and many diseases and let people travel over land, water and air. Among the natural sciences physics holds one of the leading places: each newly discovered law strongly influences the development of society. In Uzbekistan, research in physics is carried out mainly by institutes of the Academy of Sciences and by university laboratories. For example, institutes of astronomy, physics and technology, materials science and seismology study mechanical, heat, electric, light and sound phenomena (the names and structure of institutions change over time).
Worked examples
Knowledge about electricity → lamps, refrigerators, telephones, computers: daily life changed.
Mirzo Ulugbek (1394–1449) had an observatory built in Samarkand and observed the stars — in the Middle Ages astronomy and physics were at a high level in Central Asia.
Class activity
“A world without physics”: in 2 minutes each group writes how a day would pass without electricity, fuel and clean water, then reads it out.
Practice
1
Name two discoveries that made life easier for ancient people.
Inventing hunting tools and learning to use fire.
2
Who mainly carries out research in physics in Uzbekistan?
Scientists at the institutes of the Academy of Sciences and in university laboratories.
3
What does a seismology institute study?
Earthquakes.
4
Why does the discovery of laws of physics affect the whole of society?
Because new machines, energy sources and technologies are created on the basis of new laws, and these change work and daily life.
