Determining the radii of Solar System bodies
Textbook: pp. 39–40

Explanation
If the angular radius ρ and distance D of a body are known, the linear radius is r = D · sin ρ ≈ D · ρ (ρ in radians). The Sun and Moon have angular diameters ≈ 0.5° (Sun ≈ 32′, Moon ≈ 31′), so the Sun’s radius is ≈ 696,000 km (≈ 109 times the Earth’s) and the Moon’s ≈ 1737 km (≈ 0.27 of the Earth’s). Eratosthenes (3rd century BCE) found the Earth’s radius from the distance between Alexandria and Syene and the difference in the Sun’s angle. Biruni (early 11th century, on the hill of Nandana fort near Pind Dadan Khan in present-day Pakistan) measured the height of a mountain and the dip of the horizon and found an Earth radius of ≈ 6340 km – very close to today’s mean value, 6371 km. In Biruni’s method, from a mountain’s height h and the horizon’s dip angle θ, R = h · cos θ / (1 – cos θ).
Worked examples
Eratosthenes’s method: two cities 800 km apart, angle difference 7.2°. The full circle is 360° : 7.2° = 50 times larger, so the circumference is 800 · 50 = 40,000 km.
The Sun’s angular diameter is 32′ = 32 / 3438 rad ≈ 0.0093; for D = 150 million km the diameter ≈ 150 · 0.0093 ≈ 1.4 million km, radius ≈ 0.7 million km.
Class activity
With an adult: hold a 10 cm ball at the far end of a room and estimate its angular diameter with a ruler and string triangle (angle ≈ diameter / distance). Looking at the Sun is forbidden.
Practice
1
How is the linear radius found from the angular size and distance?
r ≈ D · ρ (ρ in radians).
2
Two cities are 1000 km apart with a 9° angle difference. What is the Earth’s circumference in km? (1000 · 360 : 9)
40000
3
About what Earth radius did Biruni find, and how does it compare with today’s value?
≈ 6340 km; about 0.5 % less than today’s mean 6371 km.
4
Why are the Sun and Moon almost equal in angular size though their real sizes differ greatly?
The Sun is ≈ 400 times larger and ≈ 400 times farther.
