Explanation

A blog post is an informal article. It has three parts. 1. A title that tells the reader what the post is about: Our Family Reading Hour. 2. Details about your experience: what you did, when, who was with you, how you felt and what changed. Use the present perfect and the past simple, and connectors such as at first, but, so and because. 3. A call to action: a short sentence that asks readers to do something. It starts with a verb: Try a reading hour this week. Choose one hour. Start small. Add advice with should if you like. Use a friendly voice, with questions such as Why not try it? Write 60 to 80 words; if you can, write up to 110. Your book has a model on page 69; yours must be about a different habit. Then do the check-up in the examples.

Worked examples

Our Family Reading Hour
Three weeks ago my family started a reading hour after dinner. We switch off all the screens, and everyone chooses a book, a magazine or a puzzle. At first my little brother complained, but now he asks for it every night. We have also found that our evenings are calmer. Why not try it? Choose one hour this week, switch off your screens and read together. Start small, so it is easy to continue.

Read the model blog post. A grown-up can read it aloud first.
Find the parts. Title: Our Family Reading Hour. Details: three weeks ago, after dinner, switch off all the screens. Result: our evenings are calmer. Call to action: Choose one hour this week, switch off your screens and read together.
Connectors in the model: but (At first my little brother complained, but now he asks for it every night), so (Start small, so it is easy to continue) and also (We have also found …).
Check-up in your own words: I can read a text and find benefits and drawbacks. I can use must, mustn’t, don’t have to, can and should. I can use although, while and on one hand … on the other hand. I can give polite advice. I can write a blog post with a call to action.
Class activity

Write your blog post about a small change in your habits (for example reading before bed, a walk after school or a no-phone meal). Give it a title, write the details and the result, and finish with a call to action. Count your words (60 to 80). Read it to a grown-up and ask them if they will try your idea.
