Installing a program: the steps as a flow

ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lesson 4: pp. 27–29
GoalPut the installation steps in the right order for each route.
New words
installation · the steps that make a program ready to use on a deviceinstructions · the messages in which the setup program asks you to choose and to confirmunzip · to open a compressed file so that you can use what is insidedrive · the slot or part of a device that reads a disc or storage unit
Explanation

Each route has its own order of steps, and the order matters. For a disc: put the disc into the drive, wait for the box that starts by itself, run the setup program, and follow the instructions. For a downloaded file: find the file, open the setup file so that the setup program starts, and follow the instructions. For a compressed file: unzip the files first, then open the setup file, then follow the instructions. In every route the last part is the same: the setup program asks you some questions, and you read each one carefully before you answer. Steps differ from program to program and from device to device, so we learn the ideas, not the exact buttons. Always ask your teacher or a family member to help when you install something for real. In this lesson we practise on paper.

Worked examples
The disc route as four boxes in the right order. If you run the setup program before the disc is in the drive, there is nothing to run, so the order matters.
Youssef writes the steps for a zipped program: “open the setup file, unzip the files, follow the instructions.” His teacher says the first two are in the wrong order. The correct order is: unzip, then open the setup file, then follow the instructions.

Askswhich folder to usewhether you accept the rules
Karim installs two programs on paper. The first asks him to choose a folder. The second asks him to accept some rules. The questions differ, so the steps differ between programs. He reads each question before he answers.
Class activity

Write the steps of each route on separate paper strips, one step per strip, without numbers. Mix them up and give them to a partner to put in order. Then swap. Check the answers together, and discuss what goes wrong if two strips are swapped.

Practice
1
Put in order for a disc: follow the instructions, put the disc in the drive, run the setup program. What is first?
2
In the compressed-file route, what comes before opening the setup file?
3
Why do we say “steps differ from program to program”?
4
Who should help you when you install something for real?
