The converse: proving that a line is parallel to a side from equal ratios, and proofs that use several triangles

Mathematics Sec 1 Term 1, Unit 3, Lesson 1
GoalProve that a line is parallel to a side by checking that two ratios are equal.
New words
converse · the theorem read backwards: equal ratios give parallel linesmidsegment · the segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle
Explanation

The converse: if D is on AB and E is on AC and AD/DB = AE/EC, then DE ∥ BC. Proof: add 1 to both sides, so AB/DB = AC/EC and then AD/AB = AE/AC. The angle A is common, so △ADE ~ △ABC by SAS. Therefore ∠ADE = ∠ABC, and these are corresponding angles, so DE ∥ BC. To test it, compute both ratios and compare them; both must compare the pieces on the same side of the vertex, for example AD/DB and AE/EC (the upper piece to the lower piece on each side). Mixing AD/DB with AE/AC proves nothing. A special case: when D and E are midpoints, both ratios are 1, so DE ∥ BC and DE = BC/2 (the midsegment theorem). Parallel lines also pass the ratio on from one triangle to the next, so we can follow a chain of parallel lines through a quadrilateral.

Ratios you computeConclusion
AD/DB = AE/EC (equal)DE ∥ BC
AD/DB ≠ AE/ECDE is not parallel to BC
AD/DB compared with AE/ACproves nothing: different kinds of pieces
Worked examples
In △ABC the angle at A is a right angle, D is on AB with AD = 6 and DB = 9, and E is on AC with AE = 8 and EC = 12. AD/DB = 6/9 = 2/3 and AE/EC = 8/12 = 2/3, so DE ∥ BC. Also DE = 10 (a 6-8-10 right triangle) and DE/BC = AD/AB = 6/15 = 2/5, so BC = 25 cm.
AD = 4, DB = 6, AE = 5 and EC = 8. AD/DB = 2/3 but AE/EC = 5/8. They differ, so DE is not parallel to BC.
In quadrilateral ABCD, X is on AB, Y on AC and Z on AD with XY ∥ BC and YZ ∥ CD. From △ABC: AX/XB = AY/YC. From △ACD: AY/YC = AZ/ZD. So AX/XB = AZ/ZD, and by the converse XZ ∥ BD. If AX/XB = 2/3 and AZ = 6, then ZD = 9.
Class activity

Test with a ruler. Draw a triangle ABC, mark D on AB and E on AC, measure AD, DB, AE, EC, and compute both ratios. Then draw DE and check with set squares whether DE ∥ BC.
