Forming an equation whose roots are built from the roots of another equation, such as L², 1/L or L + M, without solving it
Mathematics Sec 1 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 3
GoalForm a new equation from expressions in the roots of a given equation, using only the sum and the product.
New words
symmetric expression · an expression that does not change if L and M swap places, such as L² + M²new roots · the numbers built from L and M that the new equation must have as roots
Explanation
Sometimes the new roots are built from the roots L and M of a given equation, for example L² and M². We never solve the given equation: we get L + M = −b/a and LM = c/a, and then work out the new sum and the new product from them. Two identities do most of the work: L² + M² = (L + M)² − 2LM and (L − M)² = (L + M)² − 4LM. Then write x² − (new sum)x + (new product) = 0 and clear fractions. Take 2x² − 5x + 1 = 0, where L + M = 5/2 and LM = 1/2. For the roots L² and M²: new sum = 25/4 − 1 = 21/4, new product = 1/4, so the equation is 4x² − 21x + 1 = 0. For 1/L and 1/M: new sum = (L + M)/LM = 5, new product = 1/LM = 2, so x² − 5x + 2 = 0.

Worked examples
L and M are the roots of x² − 4x + 2 = 0; form the equation with roots L² and M². L + M = 4, LM = 2. New sum = 16 − 4 = 12, new product = 2² = 4. The equation is x² − 12x + 4 = 0.
For the same equation, form the equation with roots 1/L and 1/M. New sum = (L + M)/LM = 4/2 = 2, new product = 1/2. The equation is x² − 2x + 1/2 = 0, that is 2x² − 4x + 1 = 0.
Form the equation with roots L + 2 and M + 2. New sum = (L + M) + 4 = 8. New product = LM + 2(L + M) + 4 = 2 + 8 + 4 = 14. The equation is x² − 8x + 14 = 0.
Class activity
Test with real numbers. Take x² − 5x + 6 = 0 with roots 2 and 3. Use the method to form the equation with roots 4 and 9, and check that it is x² − 13x + 36 = 0.
Practice
1
For x² − 4x + 2 = 0 find L² + M² without solving.
(L + M)² − 2LM = 16 − 4 = 12.
2
For x² − 3x − 7 = 0 form the equation with roots L² and M².
L + M = 3, LM = −7. New sum 9 + 14 = 23, new product 49: x² − 23x + 49 = 0.
3
For x² − 3x − 7 = 0 form the equation with roots 1/L and 1/M.
New sum = 3/(−7) = −3/7, new product = −1/7: x² + (3/7)x − 1/7 = 0, i.e. 7x² + 3x − 1 = 0.
4
For 2x² − 6x + 3 = 0 find (L − M)².
L + M = 3, LM = 3/2. (L − M)² = 9 − 6 = 3.
5
A student says L² + M² = (L + M)². What is missing?
(L + M)² = L² + 2LM + M², so L² + M² = (L + M)² − 2LM. Example L = 2, M = 3: 13 = 25 − 12.
