Finding an angle from one of its ratios with the inverse function, the two possible quadrants, and slope and ramp angles
Mathematics Sec 1 Term 1, Unit 4, Lessons 5–6
GoalFind angles from a ratio, giving both quadrants, and solve ramp problems.
New words
inverse function · undoes the function: sin⁻¹ gives an angle from its sinereference angle · the acute angle with the same ratio, ignoring the signgradient (slope) · rise ÷ run = tan of the angle of slope
Explanation
The inverse functions sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹ and tan⁻¹ give an angle from a ratio. A calculator gives only one angle (between −90° and 90° for sin⁻¹ and tan⁻¹, between 0° and 180° for cos⁻¹), but a ratio usually belongs to two angles in [0°, 360°[. Method: (1) ignore the sign and find the acute reference angle; (2) use the sign of the ratio to find the two quadrants (All, Sin, Tan, Cos); (3) write the angle in each quadrant, 180° − α, 180° + α or 360° − α. For ramps: if a ramp rises h over a horizontal distance d, tan θ = h/d; if the ramp itself has length ℓ, sin θ = h/ℓ. Always draw a right triangle first.

Worked examples
Solve sin θ = 0.5 for 0° ≤ θ < 360°: reference angle 30°, sin positive in quadrants 1 and 2: θ = 30° or 150°.
Solve cos θ = −√3/2: reference angle 30°, cos negative in quadrants 2 and 3: θ = 180° − 30° = 150° or 180° + 30° = 210°. Solve tan θ = −1: reference 45°, quadrants 2 and 4: θ = 135° or 315°.
A ramp rises 1 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. tan θ = 1/12, so θ = tan⁻¹(1/12) ≈ 4.76°. A ramp 10 m long rises 1.2 m: sin θ = 1.2/10 = 0.12, so θ ≈ 6.89°. And sin θ = −0.6 gives the reference angle 36.87°, so θ ≈ 216.87° or 323.13°.
Class activity
Measure a slope. Lean a board of 2 m against a wall. Measure how high it reaches and the distance of its foot from the wall. Compute the angle with the floor from sin θ = height ÷ 2, then check with a protractor.
Practice
1
Solve sin θ = −0.5 for 0° ≤ θ < 360°.
Reference 30°, quadrants 3 and 4: θ = 210° or 330°.
2
Solve cos θ = −√2/2 for 0° ≤ θ < 360°.
Reference 45°, cos negative in quadrants 2 and 3: θ = 135° or 225°.
3
Solve tan θ = −1 for 0° ≤ θ < 360°.
Reference 45°: θ = 135° or 315°.
4
A road rises 8 m for every 100 m of horizontal distance. Find the angle of slope.
tan θ = 0.08, θ ≈ 4.57°.
5
A 10 m ramp rises 1.2 m. Find its angle with the ground.
