Sorting and counting
Discover Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 1
GoalSort things into groups, and count the living things I see.
New words
sort · put things into groupsplant · a living thing that grows in soilanimal · a living thing that can move and eats food
Explanation
We can sort things into groups in different ways. We can sort the things we play with, the things that make sounds, and the living things. A bell makes a sound. A kite is for playing. A frog is living. Living things are plants or animals. On an observation walk we look carefully. We count the plants and the animals. If we see 3 plants and 2 animals, then 3 + 2 = 5 living things.
Worked examples
Observation walk: Nour sees 3 trees and 2 birds. That is 3 + 2 = 5 living things.
Salma sorts a drum and a bell into “make sounds”. A drum is not living.
| living | non-living |
|---|---|
| tree | rock |
| ant | bench |
| cat | wall |
