How long is a minute?
Discover Term 2: Axis 4, Chapter 2
GoalPredict and test ways to measure one minute, and plan a party in hours.
New words
minute · a short piece of time that we can measure with a timerpredict · to say what you think will happen before you test
Explanation
A minute is a short time. How long is it? We can test it. A grown-up starts a timer. First we predict how many hops we can do in one minute. Then we hop and count. We can try other ways too, like clapping or counting quietly in our head. A timer shows the real minute, but counting in our head can be too fast or too slow. Hours are longer than minutes. A party can last three hours. A timetable says what happens first, next and last.
Worked examples
Youssef predicts 20 hops in a minute. He hops, and a grown-up watches the timer. He counts 28 hops. His prediction was lower.
Mariam counts quietly in her head and stops at 40. The timer shows the minute is not finished. Counting in the head is not always the same as a timer.
| time | what we do |
|---|---|
| first hour | play games |
| second hour | eat together |
| third hour | draw and dance |
Class activity
Minute test: with a grown-up and a timer, predict how many times you can hop on one foot in one minute. Then hop on a soft floor and count. Try a second way, such as clapping. Which way gave the bigger number? Draw your two results as two bars.
