Old monuments of Egypt
Discover Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 4
GoalName some old monuments in Egypt and say how to behave when we visit them.
New words
monument · a very old and important building or statuepyramid · a huge stone building with pointed topSphinx · a big old statue with a lion’s body and a person’s headtemple · an old building where people long ago worshipped
Explanation
Egypt has some of the most famous monuments in the world. The pyramids and the Sphinx are in Giza, near Cairo, in the north. They are about 4,500 years old. Luxor is far to the south and has old temples near the Nile. People come from many countries to see them. We must respect monuments. We stand in line, speak quietly, keep the place clean and do not touch anything unless a guide says we can.
Worked examples
Youssef visits the pyramids with his school. He travels by bus from Cairo. The pyramids are in Giza.
Malak lives in Cairo. Luxor is far to the south. Her family travels there by train along the Nile.
At a monument, Nour stands in line and keeps the place clean. She does not touch the old stones.
Class activity
My favourite monument. With a grown-up, look at pictures of a pyramid, the Sphinx or a temple. Build a model with boxes, blocks or clay. Tell a friend why you like it, and say one rule for visiting.
