Staying safe on the road
Discover Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 2
GoalSay the road rules and what the traffic light colours mean.
New words
traffic light · lights that tell cars and people when to stop and gocrossing · a safe place to cross the roadpavement · the path beside the road for people who walkseat belt · a belt that keeps us safe in a car
Explanation
Roads are busy, so we follow road rules. We walk on the pavement and hold a grown-up’s hand. We cross the road at a crossing. We stop, look both ways and listen. A red light means stop. A yellow light means get ready. A green light means go. In a car we wear a seat belt.
Worked examples
Marwan waits at the crossing. The light is red, so he waits. When it turns green, he crosses with his mother.
Jana sits in the car. She puts on her seat belt before the car starts.
Habiba’s ball rolls towards the road. She does not run after it. She stops and asks a grown-up to help.
Class activity
Road safety game. Cut a red circle and a green circle from paper. A friend holds one up. Green: walk. Red: stop and freeze. Play indoors or in a safe yard, never on a road. Then say the three rules: stop, look, listen.
