Terms of service: age, ownership, deleting
ICT Prep 3 Term 1, Unit 2, Lesson 2: pp. 77–80
GoalAsk the right questions about a service’s terms: minimum age, who owns what you make, and deleting your history.
New words
terms of service (TOS) · the rules a service asks you to accept before you use itminimum age · the youngest age a service allows; it differs from service to serviceownership · who has the rights to something that was madedelete history · a setting, if the service offers it, that removes saved chats
Explanation
Almost every online service asks you to accept its terms of service before use. They are long, but three questions are worth looking for. First, the minimum age: each service sets its own, and many ask for 13 or older or an agreement from a parent. Do not guess; read the terms together with a grown-up. Second, who owns what you make with the tool, such as a text or a picture. This depends on the service’s terms and on the law of your country, so the honest answer is to read it and ask. Third, can you delete your chat history? Some services have a setting for it. Rules differ between countries and services, and they change, so always check the current terms, and do not rely on what a friend says.

Worked examples
find the terms of service→read them with a grown-up→check the minimum age→choose the privacy settings
Salma wants to try a new AI service. With her father she follows four steps: find the terms, read them together, check the minimum age, and choose the privacy settings. If the age does not fit, they do not use it.
Omar makes a picture with an AI tool for a school poster and asks who owns it. His teacher says the answer depends on the service’s terms and on the rules of the school and the country, so Omar reads the terms with her and writes on the poster which tool helped.
Class activity
With a grown-up, look at the terms of service of a service your family already uses, or imagine one. Write three questions to look for: the minimum age, ownership, deleting history. Write where you would find each answer. Do not sign up for anything new.
Practice
1
Is the minimum age the same for every service?
No. Each service sets its own, so read the terms together with a grown-up.
2
Why is it unwise to say that the person who typed the request always owns an AI picture?
Ownership depends on the service’s terms and the country’s law, so we read the terms and ask.
3
How can you remove your saved chats?
Look for a delete-history setting; some services offer one.
4
Why should you check the current terms yourself instead of trusting a friend?
Terms differ between services and countries and they change.
