Inside a chloroplast: plastids and pigments
Science Prep 2 Term 1, Unit 3: pp. 64–69
GoalDescribe where photosynthesis happens and name the parts of a chloroplast and their jobs.
New words
chloroplast · a green plastid where photosynthesis happenschlorophyll · the green pigment that absorbs lightstroma · the fluid inside a chloroplast
Explanation
Photosynthesis happens in green plastids called chloroplasts, mostly in leaf cells. Plastids are small organelles in plant cells. Chromoplasts hold coloured pigments, as in plum skin and petals. Leucoplasts are colourless, as in a potato. A chloroplast has a double membrane around it. Inside is a fluid, the stroma, which contains enzymes for the light-independent reactions. Floating in the stroma are stacks of flat sacs called grana, each sac a thylakoid, whose membranes hold chlorophyll. The light-dependent reactions happen in the grana. We cannot draw a chloroplast honestly as a photograph here, so we use a diagram of boxes. Chloroplasts are found in leaves and green stems, and also in green algae, but not in roots buried in soil. A leaf is a good place for photosynthesis: it is flat and thin, so light and carbon dioxide reach every cell.
chloroplast: double membrane→grana: stacks of thylakoids with chlorophyll→stroma: fluid with enzymes
Worked examples
Which parts of a plant can photosynthesise? Green leaves and green stems, because they contain chloroplasts. A white root buried in soil cannot, because it has no chloroplasts and no light.
Name the plastid: (a) in a red petal, (b) in a potato, (c) in a green leaf. (a) chromoplast, (b) leucoplast, (c) chloroplast.
Where in a chloroplast would the light-dependent reactions be, in the grana or the stroma? In the grana, where the chlorophyll is. The stroma holds the enzymes for the next stage.
Class activity
Leaf cover, with a grown-up. Choose a houseplant with a large leaf. Cover half of one leaf with a piece of card held by a paper clip for one week, and leave the rest uncovered. Look at the colour of both halves and describe what you see. Say what the card kept away from the leaf. Do not pick other people’s plants and do not use ethanol or heat.
Practice
1
Where does photosynthesis take place in a plant cell?
In the chloroplasts.
2
What is the job of chlorophyll?
It absorbs light energy.
3
Name the fluid inside a chloroplast and what it contains.
The stroma, which contains enzymes for the light-independent reactions.
4
Why do potato tubers, which are not green, contain leucoplasts, not chloroplasts?
They grow underground without light; leucoplasts store starch.
