Big data: sources, 5 Vs and types
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Write the five Vs and one classroom picture for each.
Volume: a huge library; velocity: students at the bell; variety: a school bag; veracity: a wrong mark; value: a decision that helps.
2
Sort these into structured, unstructured or semi-structured: marks table, a photo, an e-mail.
Marks table: structured; photo: unstructured; e-mail: semi-structured.
3
Explain why a long list with many mistakes is not valuable data.
Mistakes lower veracity, so decisions based on the list may be wrong, even if the volume is large.
4
Write two sources of big data and say what each one records, without using real names.
For example a watch records steps; a traffic map records how crowded roads are.
