Drought, floods and melting ice
Drought has these causes: too much water used, little rain and irregular watering. Soil moisture sensors tell the system how dry the soil is, AI works out how much water is needed, and a machine waters only when the land needs it, so less water is wasted. Floods come from sudden, strong rain. Sensors measure the rain and the speed of the water in the streets, AI sends a warning early and suggests safer routes, and a machine or a person closes a road or opens a drain. Polar ice is melting because the Earth is warming. Sensors, sometimes carried by special machines, measure the ice, AI predicts how fast it may melt, and the results go to scientists. Remember that some of these uses are still ideas or trials, and that people make the final choices.
| Problem | Cause | Sensors | AI | Machine or person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drought | too much water used, little rain, irregular watering | soil moisture | how much water is needed | waters only when needed |
| Floods | sudden strong rain | rain and water speed | early warning, safer routes | closes a road, opens a drain |
| Melting ice | a warming Earth | ice thickness and temperature | predicts how fast it melts | data goes to scientists |
Draw three small boxes labelled drought, floods and ice. Under each, write the sensor and one sentence about what the AI could suggest. Mark with a star the box where a person must make the final choice.
