Review: atoms, the periodic table and bonds

Science Prep 1 Term 1, Units 1–4: Review
GoalReview atoms, isotopes, the periodic table and bonds with new mixed tasks.
New words
atomic number Z · the number of protons in an atommass number A · the number of protons plus neutronsvalency · the number of bonds an atom usually formsionic bond · the attraction between a positive and a negative ion
Explanation

Review the key ideas. An atom has Z protons and Z electrons. Neutrons = A − Z. Isotopes are atoms of one element with the same Z but different A. Electrons fill energy levels in order, and the number of levels is the period number. For groups 1A to 7A the outer electrons equal the group number. Metals tend to give electrons and nonmetals tend to gain them. When a metal and a nonmetal meet, the electrons move and an ionic bond forms between ions. When two nonmetals meet, they share electrons in a covalent bond. A compound has two or more elements joined chemically, while a mixture can be separated by physical means. Sodium chloride is a crystal of ions, not molecules.

Worked examples
Na+112, 8, 1
An atom has Z = 11 and A = 23. Protons 11, electrons 11, neutrons 23 − 11 = 12. Arrangement 2, 8, 1. So period 3, group 1A, valency 1.
Two atoms have Z = 17. One has A = 35 and the other A = 37. They are isotopes of the same element. They differ in neutrons: 18 and 20.
OO
Which bond? Sodium and chlorine (metal and nonmetal): ionic. Hydrogen and chlorine (two nonmetals): covalent, a single bond. Oxygen and oxygen: covalent, a double bond.
SubstanceKind
airmixture
watercompound
ironelement
Mixture, compound or element? Air: mixture. Water: compound. Iron: element. Salt water: mixture. Sugar: compound.
Class activity

Invent your own element. Choose Z between 3 and 18, write its electron arrangement, and say its period, group, valency and whether it tends to be a metal or a nonmetal. Swap with a friend and check each other’s answers.

Practice
