Paying and meeting online: what the tools are for
ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lesson 2: pp. 12–17
GoalExplain in words what payment tools and meeting tools are for and how to stay careful.
New words
payment card · a card linked to a bank account that can be used to paye-wallet · a place on a phone that holds money for paymentstransfer · sending money from one account to anotherbill · a paper or message that asks you to pay for something you used
Explanation
Digital payment tools make paying quick. A payment card is linked to a bank account. An e-wallet holds money on a phone. A payment tool on a phone can send money from one account to another, which is called a transfer, and can pay bills such as electricity or water. In this lesson we learn only the words. Children do not pay by themselves, and nobody should ever share card details or passwords. Ask a grown-up. A second kind of tool is for meeting. A video call lets people see and hear each other even when they are in different cities. They can talk, show a file on the screen and work on a project together. Week 10 teaches it in detail. For most of these services an adult needs an e-mail address, and Weeks 7 and 8 explain how an account works.

Worked examples
bill message→check the amount→pay→confirmation
Omar’s father gets a message that the water bill is ready. He opens a payment tool on his phone, checks the amount, pays, and gets a confirmation. Omar watches and learns the words: bill, pay, confirm.
Marwan lives in Alexandria and his cousin Mariam lives in Luxor. They hold a video call to show each other their drawings. They see each other’s faces while they talk, as if they sat in one room. A grown-up helps them to start the call.
Habiba gets a message that says: “Send us your card number and win a prize!” She does not answer. She shows the message to her mother. Private details stay private, and a grown-up decides what to do. She is not in trouble; she did the right thing.
Class activity
Write the four words (card, e-wallet, transfer, bill) on cards with their meanings on the back. Ask a partner to give the meaning, then swap. Then write three rules for keeping payment information private. For example: never share a card number, never share a password, always ask a grown-up first.
