Area, grouping factors and two strategies
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
A rectangle has 4 rows with 7 tiles in each row. Find its area. Then draw it on squared paper and count to check.
4 × 7 = 28 square tiles. The drawing should show 28 squares.
2
Find 2 × 6 × 5 in two different groupings.
(2 × 6) × 5 = 12 × 5 = 60 and 2 × (6 × 5) = 2 × 30 = 60. Grouping 2 × 5 = 10 first also works: 10 × 6 = 60.
3
Break 14 × 6 into tens and ones, then find the product.
(10 × 6) + (4 × 6) = 60 + 24 = 84.

Karim says the area of a rectangle with 5 rows of 8 tiles is 40 + 8 = 48. Find his mistake and the correct area.
5 × 8 = 40, so the area is 40 square tiles. He added an extra row of 8 by mistake.

Where is the minute hand at 9:08? Then solve 63 ÷ 7 and check with multiplication.
At 9:08 the hour hand is just after 9 and the minute hand is 8 small marks after the 12, just past the 1. 63 ÷ 7 = 9, and 9 × 7 = 63.
