Forming the equation x² − (L + M)x + LM = 0 from two given roots, real or complex

Mathematics Sec 1 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 3
GoalWrite the quadratic equation whose two roots are given.
New words
form an equation · write an equation that has the given numbers as its rootscommon denominator · a number that clears all fractions in the equation
Explanation

If L and M are the roots, then (x − L)(x − M) = 0. Expanding gives x² − (L + M)x + LM = 0. So we only need the sum and the product of the given roots: subtract the sum in front of x and add the product at the end. If the roots are fractions, the sum and the product are fractions too, and we multiply the whole equation by a common denominator to get whole-number coefficients. For complex roots, simplify first: roots such as 6/(1 + i) become 3 − 3i by the conjugate method. Then add and multiply as usual. Conjugate roots p ± qi always give x² − 2px + (p² + q²) = 0, with real coefficients.

ƒFormula
x² − (L + M)x + L × M = 0
minus the sum, plus the product
Worked examples
Roots 5 and −2. Sum = 3, product = −10. The equation is x² − 3x − 10 = 0. Check: (x − 5)(x + 2) = x² − 3x − 10 ✓.
Roots 2/3 and 3/4. Sum = 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12, product = 6/12 = 1/2. The equation is x² − (17/12)x + 1/2 = 0. Multiply by 12: 12x² − 17x + 6 = 0.
Roots 6/(1 + i) and 6/(1 − i). Simplify: 6/(1 + i) = 6(1 − i)/2 = 3 − 3i, and 6/(1 − i) = 3 + 3i. Sum = 6, product = 9 + 9 = 18. The equation is x² − 6x + 18 = 0. Its discriminant 36 − 72 < 0 confirms complex roots.
Roots 2 + √3 and 2 − √3. Sum 4, product 4 − 3 = 1. The equation is x² − 4x + 1 = 0.
