How society changes with technology

ICT Secondary 1 Term 1, Chapters 4–5: pp. 42–52
GoalPut the four stages of society in order and say which new technologies belong to the information society.
New words
information society · a society where information is the most important resourcedigital divide · the gap between people who can use digital technology and those who cannotvirtual reality (VR) · a made-up world that a person entersaugmented reality (AR) · made-up things added to the real view
Explanation

Historians describe four stages. In a hunter-gatherer society people lived on what they could hunt and gather. In an agricultural society land became the main resource. In an industrial society machines and factories came first. In an information society, information itself is the main resource: it is made, stored and moved by technology. Many technologies belong to it. Big data means data so large that special tools are needed to study it. Machine learning lets a program find patterns in examples. The internet of things connects everyday objects, such as a lamp or a door lock, to a network, and a smart home uses this to be controlled and to react. Virtual reality puts you inside a made-up world; augmented reality adds made-up things, such as an arrow, to what you really see. There are benefits, for example easier learning and services, and problems, such as the digital divide: some people have no device, no connection or no training, and they fall behind. Some thinkers describe a vision of a society that uses data and artificial intelligence to solve social problems; it is a plan to discuss, not a fact. We do not know exactly how jobs will change, so we study, ask questions and stay flexible.

Worked examples
TechnologyOne-line idea
big datadata too large for ordinary tools
machine learninga program finds patterns in examples
internet of thingseveryday objects join a network
virtual realityyou enter a made-up world
augmented realitymade-up things on the real view
Match each technology with a one-line idea. The picture lists them. A smart home that switches on a lamp when it gets dark uses the internet of things. A phone view that draws an arrow on a real street uses augmented reality.

A village school has a good building but no internet and no devices. Its pupils cannot use online lessons that pupils in a city school use. This is the digital divide. Solving it means connections, devices and training, not only one of them.
Class activity

Interview a grown-up (with their permission): which tasks did they do by hand when they were your age that a device does today? Write three, and one new problem the new way brought. Do not write their name in your notes.

Practice
1
Which resource is most important in an information society?
2
Put in order: industrial, hunter-gatherer, information, agricultural.
3
How is augmented reality different from virtual reality?
4
Give one cause of the digital divide.
