Models and their types

Textbook: pp. 20–25
GoalExplains the ideas of object, its property and value, model and modelling; sorts models by field of use, time factor and form of presentation.
New words
object: a thing, process or event that we study or pay attention to · obyektmodel: a simplified copy or image of an object that keeps the features important for the study · modelmodelling: making and studying models in order to learn about the original · modellashtirishinformation model: a set of data describing the features and state of an object · axborot modeli
Explanation

An object is the thing, process or event we study. Every object has a name (a common name belongs to many objects, a proper name to just one) and properties, and each property has a value: for example, for the object “file” the property “type” may have the value “.png”. A model is a simplified copy or image of an object that keeps the features important for the study and drops the unimportant ones. When studying the real object is dangerous, expensive, too large or too small, its model is studied instead. By field of use, models are educational, experimental, game, simulation and scientific-technical; by the time factor they are static (ignore change) or dynamic (show change over time); by form of presentation they are material (globe, scale model) or information models (formula, drawing, text, program). By means of expression there are also mathematical, physical and biological models. No model shows every feature of the original, so the result is only close to reality.

Worked examples
Object: “book”. Properties: number of pages (value 240), cover colour (value black). A library card is an information model of this book: it holds only the author, title and year, and the cover colour is left out because it does not matter for searching.
A globe is a material model of the Earth; S = a · b is a mathematical (symbolic information) model of the area of a rectangle; testing a scale model of an aircraft in a wind tunnel is an experimental model; a computer animation of the planets moving in the Solar System is a dynamic simulation model; a building plan is a static model.
Class activity

“Find its model”: the teacher names an object (river, school, bus). Groups find one model type for each (scale model, map, formula, table) and explain which property was left out.

Practice
1
What is a model?
2
Name the kind of model: a) a globe; b) the formula y = 2x + 1; c) a football simulator game; d) testing an aircraft scale model in a wind tunnel.
3
Give two properties of the object “phone” with their values.
4
Why do we study models of lightning or the Sun rather than the real things?
