Active and passive smoking, vaping, and saying no

Science Prep 3 Term 1, Unit 1: pp. 25–33
GoalCompare active and passive smoking, say why vaping is not harmless, and give ways to say no.
New words
passive smoking · a non-smoker breathing in the smoke of other peopleactive smoking · the smoker breathing in the smoke directlyvaping · breathing in the vapour made by heating a liquid, which often contains nicotine, with an electronic device
Explanation

There are two main types of smoking. Traditional smoking burns tobacco. Vaping heats a liquid that contains nicotine with an electronic device. Both harm the lungs and the heart, and the idea that vaping is harmless is a misconception. Exposure can be active or passive. In active smoking the smoker breathes the smoke in. In passive smoking a non-smoker breathes the smoke the smoker breathes out, or the smoke from the burning tip, which has not passed through a filter. So non-smokers share many of the risks, especially children in a closed room. To say no, decide in advance and keep the decision, choose friends who care about health, keep busy with sport, reading and hobbies, avoid smoky places, learn the facts and ask a parent or teacher for help. People who smoke are not bad people: addiction is strong, and many want to stop with a doctor’s help. This lesson gives no advice about products or medicines.

Worked examples
A boy says: “vaping is just water vapour”. Reply: vaping heats a liquid that often contains nicotine, and both vaping and traditional smoking harm the lungs and the heart. We do not need to compare how harmful: both are harmful.
Which child is a passive smoker? Marwan sits in a closed room where an adult smokes. Mariam is far away at the playground. Marwan breathes the smoke without smoking himself, so he is exposed passively; Mariam is not.
busy and active
Role-play lines for saying no, in your own words: a short, calm “No, thanks, I don’t”; a change of subject; suggesting a game instead; walking away. A good line is one you can say in your own way, and a friend who respects you will accept it.
Class activity

Poster and role-play. Design a school poster, with words and drawings, called “Choose your air”, with three facts about smoking, one about passive smoking and one way to say no. Use no pictures of cigarettes or vapes. With a friend or a grown-up, act out a short scene in which you say no calmly, and then swap roles. Write down the line you liked best.

Practice

2
Is vaping harmless? Explain briefly.
3
Why does smoke from the burning tip harm people nearby?
4
Give two healthy ways to keep busy instead of smoking.
