GoalSolve one-step and two-step story problems about LE and grams, and check that the answer makes sense.
New words
story problem · a problem told in wordsLE · Egyptian pounds, the money used in Egyptgram (g) · a small unit of mass
Explanation
A story problem tells a short story with numbers. First read it and say what the question is. Then decide which operation to use: add to put together, subtract to find what is left or the difference, multiply for equal groups and divide for sharing. Solve it, and check that the answer makes sense. Write the unit in the answer, such as LE for money or g for mass. Some problems need two steps. If Nour earns 8 LE every week, in 6 weeks she earns 6 × 8 = 48 LE. A bag of rice has a mass of 250 g, so 6 bags have a mass of 6 × 250 = 1,500 g.

Worked examples
Nour helps a neighbour and earns 8 LE every week. How much does she earn in 6 weeks? Six equal weeks, so multiply: 6 × 8 = 48 LE.
Tickets for a school play cost 3 LE each. A family buys 9 tickets and pays with a 50 LE note. Step 1: 9 × 3 = 27 LE. Step 2: 50 − 27 = 23 LE change.
Youssef packs 6 bags of sugar of 250 g each. The total mass is 6 × 250 = 1,500 g.
Class activity
Shop story. Look at three prices on a shop leaflet, in whole LE. Write two story problems of your own: one with multiplication and one with two steps, such as buying 4 things and getting change from 100 LE. Swap with a partner, solve and check each other's work.
Practice
1
Seif earns 9 LE each week for walking a neighbour’s dog. How much does he earn in 5 weeks?
5 × 9 = 45 LE.
2
A school buys 8 packs of markers with 12 markers in each pack. How many markers is that?
