Bar graphs and class data
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Ask 10 people at home or on your street: What is your favourite colour? Make a tally mark for each answer. Which colour won?
The tally has 10 marks in all. The colour with the most marks is the winner.
2
Draw a bar graph for this tally on squared paper. Give it a title.
Bars 3, 5 and 2 squares tall, one for each colour, with a title such as Our favourite colour. In all there are 3 + 5 + 2 = 10 votes.
3
Write the numbers 4, 9, 2 and 6 from least to greatest. Then add them.
2, 4, 6, 9. The sum is 2 + 4 + 6 + 9 = 21.
4
Draw 7 tally marks the right way. How many groups of five do you see?
One group of five (four lines and a line across) and two more lines.
5
Ask your family: Who has only sisters, only brothers, both, or none? Write how many people are in each group.
Answers differ. Each person is counted in one group only, and the four numbers add up to the number of people asked.
