Money story problems

Discover Mathematics P2: Term 2, Lessons 61–70
GoalRead a money story, decide whether to add or subtract, and write the answer in LE.
New words
story problem · a short story that ends with a questionaltogether · all the amounts added togetherleft · the money that remains after spending
Explanation

In a money story, first find the numbers and the question. If money is put together, and the story says altogether, in all or total, we add. If money is spent or given away, or the question asks how much is left or how much more, we subtract. Write the number sentence, then the answer with LE. Omar has 36 LE and Hana has 53 LE. Altogether they have 36 + 53 = 89 LE. Check that the answer makes sense: when we add, the answer is bigger than each number we added.

The story says…We…

Worked examples
36 LE53 LE89 LE
Omar has 36 LE and Hana has 53 LE. How much money do they have altogether? 36 + 53 = 89, so 89 LE.
28 LE?75 LE
Rahma had 75 LE. She spent 28 LE on a book. How much is left? 75 − 28 = 47, so 47 LE is left.
Karim saved 31 LE in one month and 26 LE in the next month. How much did he save in all? 31 + 26 = 57, so 57 LE.
Class activity

Write a money story of your own. Choose two amounts, such as 56 LE and 23 LE, and write one story that adds them and one that subtracts them. Read your stories to a family member and let them solve them.
