Cutting ordered data into four equal parts: Q1, Q2 (the median) and Q3, and the case when n + 1 is divisible by 4

Statistics Sec 3 Term 1, Unit 2, Lesson 2
GoalCut ordered data into four equal parts with Q₁, Q₂ and Q₃, and find them when n + 1 is divisible by 4.

Explanation

The median cuts ordered data into two equal halves, but sometimes we want four levels, such as weak, fair, good and excellent. Three values do this: the lower quartile Q₁ has a quarter of the data before it, Q₂ is the median, and the upper quartile Q₃ has three quarters before it. First put the data in order. Suppose there are n values and n + 1 is a multiple of 4. Then n is odd and the three quartiles are values of the data, in the places (n + 1) ÷ 4, (n + 1) ÷ 2 and 3(n + 1) ÷ 4. Why? The median is in place (n + 1) ÷ 2. Before it there are (n − 1) ÷ 2 values, an odd number, and Q₁ is the middle of those, in place (n + 1) ÷ 4. Q₃ is the middle of the values after the median. Quartiles are not defined in one way only; this is the rule of our book, and we use it all the way. The picture shows 11 invented counts of passengers on a bus route, in order.

Worked examples
Eleven values: n + 1 = 12, which is divisible by 4. The places are 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 12 ÷ 2 = 6 and 3 × 12 ÷ 4 = 9. From the ordered list: Q₁ = 25, Q₂ = 31, Q₃ = 38 passengers.

Seven daily tips in LE, given in this order: 12, 9, 15, 20, 11, 18, 14. First order them: 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 20. Now n + 1 = 8, and the places are 2, 4 and 6. So Q₁ = 11, Q₂ = 14, Q₃ = 18 LE.
Fifteen evenings of homework, in minutes: 52, 47, 60, 38, 55, 41, 63, 49, 57, 45, 66, 50, 44, 59, 53. Ordered: 38, 41, 44, 45, 47, 49, 50, 52, 53, 55, 57, 59, 60, 63, 66. n + 1 = 16, the places are 4, 8 and 12: Q₁ = 45, Q₂ = 52, Q₃ = 59 minutes. A quarter of the evenings (three or four) are 45 minutes or less; three quarters are 59 or less.
Class activity

Write down the number of pages you read on each of 7 days, or the number of goals in 11 matches (invent them if you wish). Order them, check that n + 1 is divisible by 4 and find Q₁, Q₂ and Q₃.

Practice
1
For which of n = 9, 11, 13, 15 is n + 1 divisible by 4?
2
Data (n = 7): 23, 8, 15, 30, 12, 19, 26. Find Q₁, Q₂ and Q₃.
3
For n = 19 find the places of Q₁, Q₂ and Q₃.
