Pearson’s formula: what the sums Σx, Σy, Σxy, Σx² and Σy² mean and how they fit the formula

Statistics Sec 3 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 1
GoalSay what each of the sums Σx, Σy, Σxy, Σx² and Σy² means, and how they fit into Pearson’s formula.
New words
Σ (sigma) · “the sum of”: add up all the valuesΣxy · multiply the two numbers of each pair, then addΣx² and (Σx)² · Σx²: square each x, then add. (Σx)²: add the x’s, then squarePearson’s coefficient · the value of r for numerical data, from the five sums
Explanation

Pearson’s correlation coefficient turns a cloud of dots into one number. For n pairs (x, y) it is r = (nΣxy − Σx·Σy) ÷ (√(nΣx² − (Σx)²) × √(nΣy² − (Σy)²)). The symbol Σ means “the sum of”. So Σx adds all the x-values, Σy adds all the y-values, Σxy multiplies the two numbers of each pair first and then adds the products, Σx² squares each x first and then adds, and Σy² does the same for y. Do not confuse Σx² with (Σx)²: in the first we square then add, in the second we add then square, and the results differ. Why these five sums? If x and y had no relation, the sum of the products would be close to Σx·Σy ÷ n. The numerator is n times the difference between the real sum of products and this “no relation” value: it is positive when large x go with large y, and negative when large x go with small y. Each root in the denominator measures how spread out one variable is; it is zero only when all its values are equal. Dividing by both spreads removes the units and keeps r between −1 and 1. The table below is the working for five pairs: the number of rehearsals of a school play (x) and the judges’ score out of 10 (y).

Worked examples
Fill one row. For the pair (3, 4): xy = 3 × 4 = 12, x² = 3 × 3 = 9, y² = 4 × 4 = 16. Each row of the table is filled in the same way; the last row adds every column.
From the sums (n = 5): numerator 5 × 87 − 15 × 25 = 435 − 375 = 60. First root: 5 × 55 − 15² = 275 − 225 = 50. Second root: 5 × 141 − 25² = 705 − 625 = 80. So r = 60 ÷ (√50 × √80) = 60 ÷ √4000 = 60 ÷ 63.246 = 0.9487: a strong direct correlation.
Σx² against (Σx)². For x = 1, 2, 3: Σx² = 1 + 4 + 9 = 14, but (Σx)² = (1 + 2 + 3)² = 36. Using one in place of the other gives a wrong r.
Class activity

Write four pairs of small whole numbers (for example the number of pages read and the minutes spent on four evenings). Make the five columns, find the five sums and the numerator nΣxy − Σx·Σy. Is it positive or negative, and does that agree with the way the numbers move?

Practice
1
For the pairs (2, 5), (3, 4), (6, 1) find Σx, Σy and Σxy.
2
For the same pairs find Σx² and Σy².
3
With those sums and n = 3, find the numerator nΣxy − Σx·Σy. What does its sign say?
4
Can the root √(nΣx² − (Σx)²) ever be negative, or the expression under it? Why?
5
A pupil finds Σx² for x = 5, 7, 9 and writes 21² = 441. Correct it.
