Pollination and double fertilization

Biology Sec 3 Term 1, Chapter 3: pp. 52–58
GoalDescribe self- and cross-pollination, and follow the pollen tube through double fertilization and triple fusion.
New words
pollination · the transfer of pollen grains from an anther to a stigmapollen tube · the tube made by the tube nucleus; it grows down the style to the micropyletriple fusion · the fusion of one male nucleus with the two polar nuclei, giving the triploid endosperm nucleus (3N)endosperm · the tissue that comes from the endosperm nucleus and feeds the young embryo
Explanation

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma. In self-pollination the pollen goes to the stigma of the same flower or of another flower of the same plant. In cross-pollination it goes from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant of the same species. Cross-pollination may be helped by flowers that are unisexual, by one sex maturing before the other, or by anthers placed lower than the stigma. It needs a carrier to move the pollen from flower to flower: air, insects, water or humans. When a pollen grain falls on the stigma it germinates. The tube nucleus forms the pollen tube, which grows through the stigma and down the style until it reaches the micropyle of the ovule. The tube nucleus then degenerates, and the generative nucleus divides once by mitosis into two male nuclei. One male nucleus (N) fuses with the egg nucleus (N) to give the zygote (2N), which divides to give the embryo. The other male nucleus (N) fuses with the two polar nuclei, which are both haploid, to give the endosperm nucleus, which is triploid (3N). This second fusion is the triple fusion, and the two fusions together are called double fertilization. The endosperm nucleus divides to make the endosperm tissue, which feeds the early embryo. In some seeds the tissue stays outside the embryo and fills part of the seed.

Worked examples
Chromosome numbers with invented numbers. Suppose N = 8. The egg has 8 and the male nucleus has 8, so the zygote has 8 + 8 = 16 (2N). The two polar nuclei have 8 + 8 = 16 together, and the second male nucleus adds 8, so the endosperm nucleus has 16 + 8 = 24 (3N). Check: 3 × 8 = 24.
SituationKind of pollination
pollen moves to another flower on the same plantself-pollination
wind carries pollen to a different plant of the same speciescross-pollination
pollen falls from the anther onto the stigma of its own flowerself-pollination
Self or cross?
Why two male nuclei? One for the egg, to make the new plant, and one for the polar nuclei, to start the food tissue. Without the second, the embryo would have no endosperm to feed it at the start.
Class activity

Draw the journey, with a grown-up. On a large sheet draw a carpel as a long bottle: stigma at the top, style as the neck and ovary at the base with one ovule. Use a coloured line for the pollen tube from the stigma to the micropyle. Write the words male nucleus 1 and male nucleus 2 near the ovule, and write what each does. Finish with a caption: double fertilization = _____ + _____.
