Types of reactions and the reactivity series (A)
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Write the four main types of reaction as patterns using A, B, C and D.
A + B → AB; AB → A + B; A + BC → AC + B; AB + CD → AD + CB.
2
Put these in order of reactivity from highest to lowest: Cu, Zn, Na, Fe.
Na, Zn, Fe, Cu.
3
Will silver (Ag) react with dilute hydrochloric acid? Explain with the series.
No: silver is below hydrogen, so it cannot replace it.
4
Predict yes or no: Mg in FeSO₄ solution; Cu in FeSO₄ solution.
Mg: yes (Mg is above Fe). Cu: no (Cu is below Fe).
5
A friend says a metal that is heavy is always very reactive. Give a counter-example.
Gold is very dense and heavy but is low in the series; reactivity has nothing to do with weight.
