Similar triangles: the two-angles case (AA)
Mathematics Prep 3 Term 1, Unit 3, Lesson 2
GoalProve two triangles similar when two angles of one equal two angles of the other, and use the similarity to find lengths.
New words
AA (two angles) · two triangles are similar if two angles of one equal two angles of the otheralternate angles · equal angles on opposite sides of a transversal that cuts two parallel linesvertical angles · the equal angles opposite each other where two lines crosscorresponding sides · the sides opposite the equal angles
Explanation
For triangles, a quicker test than checking everything is enough. If two angles of one triangle equal two angles of another, the third angles are equal too, because the angles of a triangle add to 180°. The triangles then have the same shape: they are similar, and their corresponding sides are proportional. This is the AA case. It often appears with parallel lines. In a triangle ABC, a line DE parallel to BC (D on AB, E on AC) makes ∠ADE = ∠ABC and ∠AED = ∠ACB (corresponding angles) and shares angle A, so △ADE ~ △ABC. When two lines AC and BD cross at E and AB ∥ CD, the alternate angles are equal and the vertical angles at E are equal, so △ABE ~ △CDE. Write the similarity with the vertices in matching order, then use the equal ratios.
Worked examples
In the picture, DE ∥ BC, AD = 6, DB = 3, EC = 4 and BC = 15. Find AE and DE. DE ∥ BC gives ∠ADE = ∠ABC and ∠A is common, so △ADE ~ △ABC (AA). AB = 6 + 3 = 9, so k = AD ÷ AB = 6/9 = 2/3. Then AE ÷ AC = 2/3 with AC = AE + 4: 3AE = 2AE + 8 and AE = 8. DE ÷ BC = 2/3, so DE = 15 × 2/3 = 10. Check: 8 ÷ 12 = 2/3 ✓.
AB ∥ CD, and AC meets BD at E. AB = 8, CD = 6, AE = 10. Find CE. ∠BAE = ∠DCE (alternate angles) and ∠AEB = ∠CED (vertical angles), so △ABE ~ △CDE (AA), with A → C, B → D, E → E. AB ÷ CD = AE ÷ CE gives 8 ÷ 6 = 10 ÷ CE, so CE = 10 × 6 ÷ 8 = 7.5.
Triangle ABC has ∠A = 50° and ∠B = 60°. Triangle DEF has ∠D = 50° and ∠F = 70°. Are they similar? ∠C = 180° − 50° − 60° = 70°, and ∠E = 180° − 50° − 70° = 60°. So ∠A = ∠D and ∠B = ∠E (and ∠C = ∠F): △ABC ~ △DEF.
Class activity
Angle copy. Draw a triangle with angles 40° and 70°. Draw a second, bigger one with the same two angles. Measure all sides of both and check that the three ratios of matching sides are equal (to within a millimetre).
Practice
1
Triangles ABC and DEF: ∠A = ∠D = 50°, ∠B = 60°, ∠F = 70°. Which vertex of DEF matches B?
∠E = 60°, so E matches B and F matches C (70°).
2
In △ABC, DE ∥ BC with D on AB and E on AC. AD = 4, AB = 6, AE = 5. Find AC and then BC if DE = 6.
k = 4 ÷ 6 = 2/3. AC = 5 × 3/2 = 7.5 and BC = 6 × 3/2 = 9.
3
AB ∥ CD, AC ∩ BD = {E}, AB = 12, CD = 8, AE = 9. Find CE.
△ABE ~ △CDE, 12 ÷ 8 = 9 ÷ CE, so CE = 9 × 8 ÷ 12 = 6.
4
A triangle has angles 40° and 70°; another has angles 70° and 40°. Are they similar?
Yes (AA): each has angles 40°, 70°, 70°.
5
Right triangles ABC (right angle at B) and DEF (right angle at E) have ∠A = ∠D = 35°. Are they similar?
Yes. The right angles are equal and ∠A = ∠D, so AA gives △ABC ~ △DEF.
