ICT Prep 3 Term 1, Unit 2, Lesson 3: pp. 82–86
GoalWrite an invented family agreement for healthy play that covers time, other activities, settings, spending and talking.
New words
agreement · a plan that everyone in the family has talked about and acceptedbalance · making room for play and for other activitiesparental controls · settings that let a parent choose limits and see what a child doestrusted adult · a parent, teacher or other grown-up you can tell
Explanation

The best protection is a plan the whole family has talked about. A family agreement can cover six things. When and where to play, for example after homework in a shared room. Playing together sometimes, so that games become something to talk about. Other activities, such as sport, drawing, reading or making things, so that play has company. Settings: check the age label and use a parental-control setting, which is a setting where a parent can choose limits. Spending: any spending needs a grown-up’s yes first. And talking: if something in a game feels wrong, say so. We do not set numbers of hours here, because families and countries differ. The agreement in the table is invented; write your own with your family.

Worked examples
Mona’s family agreement is the invented one in the table. Mona wants a new item that costs real money. The agreement says that spending needs a grown-up’s yes, so she asks first.
talk togetheradd an activityupdate the agreement
Omar’s family reviews the agreement after a month. They keep the shared playing time, add a weekly football match and change one rule that did not work. A good agreement can change when the family needs it to.
Class activity

Write an invented family agreement for healthy play with the six topics of the table. Use your own words and no real details about your family. Then read it aloud and ask someone to say which rule is easiest to follow and which is hardest.
