Finding the whole with a tape diagram and a grid

Discover Mathematics P6: Term 2, Unit 10, Lessons 7–9
GoalFind the whole when a part and its percent are known, using a tape diagram or a grid.
New words
unit part · one equal piece of the tape, such as 10% or 5%known part · a part whose size and percent we are toldgrid · a square of 10 by 10 small squares that stands for the whole, 100%
Explanation

Sometimes we know a part and its percent and need the whole. Draw a tape for 100% and cut it into equal parts that fit the percent. If 20% is 12, then 20% is one fifth of the tape, so the five equal parts are 12 each and the whole is 5 × 12 = 60. If 15% is 45, cut the tape into pieces of 5%: 15% is three pieces, so one piece is 45 ÷ 3 = 15; 100% has 20 pieces, so the whole is 20 × 15 = 300. A 10 × 10 grid does the same job: each small square is 1% of the whole. Always check by taking the percent of your answer.

★Remember
Find what ONE piece (10%, 5% or 1%) is worth, then multiply to get 100%. Check by taking the percent of your answer.

12 is 20% of the whole. The tape has five equal parts of 20%. Each part is 12, so the whole is 5 × 12 = 60.
45 LE is 15% of the price of a bag. 5% is 45 ÷ 3 = 15 LE, and 100% is 20 pieces of 5%, so the price is 20 × 15 = 300 LE. Check: 15% of 300 = 45.
In a school choir 36 children are 60% of the choir. 10% is 36 ÷ 6 = 6 children and the whole choir is 10 × 6 = 60 children.
Class activity

Work backwards. Choose a whole number, take 40% of it, and give only the part and the percent to a friend. Can they find your whole number?
