Using the area formula

Discover Mathematics P5: Term 2, Unit 10, Lessons 5–8
GoalUse area = length × width for rectangles and squares, find a missing side, and find the area of a shape made of rectangles.
New words
formula · a rule written with words or letters, such as A = l × wsquare units · units for area, such as cm² or m²composite shape · a shape made by joining simpler shapes, such as two rectangles
Explanation

The area of a rectangle is its length times its width: A = l × w. It works for any numbers, whole or fractions. A square is a rectangle whose sides are equal, so A = s × s. Area is measured in square units: square centimetres, square metres. If you know the area and one side, divide to find the other side: w = A ÷ l, because multiplying and dividing undo each other. For a shape made of rectangles, such as an L-shape, there are two ways. Way 1: cut it into rectangles, find each area and add. Way 2: imagine a bigger rectangle, find its area and subtract the missing corner. Both ways must give the same area, so one way can check the other.

ƒFormula
A = l × w
Square: A = s × s. Missing side: w = A ÷ l.
Worked examples
12 m7 m
A garden bed is 12 m long and 7 m wide. A = 12 × 7 = 84 square metres.
A square courtyard has sides of 9 m. A = 9 × 9 = 81 square metres.
A rectangle has area 96 cm² and length 12 cm. Its width is 96 ÷ 12 = 8 cm. Check: 12 × 8 = 96.
8 m3 m4 m3 m4 m6 m
Find the area of this L-shape. Way 1: split it into 8 × 3 = 24 and 4 × 3 = 12, and 24 + 12 = 36. Way 2: the big rectangle 8 × 6 = 48, minus the missing corner 4 × 3 = 12, gives 36. The area is 36 square metres.
Class activity

Measure and check. Measure the length and width of a table top or a book cover in centimetres, and calculate the area. Then cover it with squared paper (each square is 1 cm²), count the squares and compare. Repeat with an L-shaped floor plan you draw yourself, using both ways.
