Equations with trigonometric ratios, and heights and distances

Mathematics Prep 3 Term 1, Unit 3, Lesson 5
GoalSolve simple trigonometric equations and use angles of elevation to find heights and distances.
New words
angle of elevation · the angle above the horizontal when you look up at somethinghorizontal · level, parallel to the groundsolve · find the angle or side that makes the equation trueround · to 2 decimal places or the nearest metre as asked
Explanation

To solve a trigonometric equation, first isolate the ratio, then recognise the angle. 2 sin θ = 1 gives sin θ = 1/2, so θ = 30°. tan θ = √3 gives θ = 60°. If the value is not in our table, use the inverse key. For heights and distances, draw a right triangle: the angle of elevation is measured from the horizontal at the observer’s eye. Pick the ratio that holds the known side and the wanted side: opposite and adjacent → tan; opposite and hypotenuse → sin; adjacent and hypotenuse → cos. Example: standing 12 m from a tree, the angle of elevation of the top is 30°. Height = 12 × tan 30° = 12/√3 = 4√3 ≈ 6.93 m (ignoring the observer’s height).

Worked examples
Solve 2cos θ − 1 = 0 for an acute θ. cos θ = 1/2, so θ = 60°.
A 6 m ladder leans on a wall at 60° to the ground. Height reached = 6 × sin 60° = 3√3 ≈ 5.20 m; the foot is 6 × cos 60° = 3 m from the wall.
From 20 m away from a tower the angle of elevation of its top is 35°. Height = 20 × tan 35° ≈ 20 × 0.7002 ≈ 14.00 m.
Class activity

Measure a height. Make a simple angle measurer, stand a known distance from a lamp-post or tree, measure the angle of elevation, and calculate the height with tan. Check by comparing with a friend’s result.

Practice
1
Solve tan θ = 1 for an acute θ.
2
Solve 2 sin θ = √3.
3
A kite string 50 m long makes 40° with the ground (string straight). How high is the kite?
4
From a point 48 m from the foot of a building the angle of elevation of the top is 30°. Find the height to 2 decimal places.
5
A ramp rises 7 m over a horizontal distance of 24 m. Find its angle with the ground to the nearest degree.
