Carbohydrates, fats and proteins
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Make a table of five foods from your kitchen and write the main nutrient in each: carbohydrate, fat or protein.
Answers differ: for example bread (carbohydrate), olive oil (fat), lentils (protein and carbohydrate), egg (protein), rice (carbohydrate).
2
Explain why starch is a good food store for a plant.
It is a long chain that does not dissolve easily, so it can be kept safely in leaves, roots and seeds.
3
Give one reason the body needs fat and one reason too much cholesterol can be a problem.
Fat stores energy (and protects organs); too much cholesterol can build up in artery walls.
4
What is an enzyme? Name one place where enzymes are used.
A protein that speeds up a reaction; for example in washing powder or in the body.
5
Find the mistake: “Carbohydrates are what make food taste sweet.”
Only some sugars are sweet; starch and cellulose are not.
