Three states, particles and plasma
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Draw three boxes of particles for a solid, a liquid and a gas. Write one sentence under each.
Solid: close together, vibrating in place. Liquid: close but sliding. Gas: far apart and moving freely.
2
Name three liquids and three gases from your home or street.
Answers differ: for example water, milk and oil; air, steam and the gas in a cooker.
3
Explain to someone at home why a smell spreads through a room.
The particles keep moving and spread from where there are many to where there are few (diffusion).
4
Find the mistake: “The particles in a solid do not move at all.”
They do move: they vibrate about fixed places.
5
Write two sentences about plasma and where we see it.
Plasma is a gas of ions and free electrons that conducts electricity. We see it in lightning, the aurora, the Sun and the stars.
