Median of a grouped table: its rank, the cumulative table and the curve
Mathematics Prep 2 Term 1, Unit 4, Lesson 2
GoalFind the median of a grouped table: work out its rank, find its class in the cumulative table, and use proportion or the curve to estimate its value.
New words
median · the middle value: half of the values are below itrank of the median · total of f ÷ 2: which value in order is the medianmedian class · the class where the cumulative frequency first reaches the rankproportion · find how far along the class the rank lies, using the cumulative values on both sides
Explanation
The median is the middle value: half of the values are below it. For a grouped table we work it out in three steps. The ages of 40 visitors at a school fair give the cumulative table: less than 10 → 0, less than 20 → 5, less than 30 → 14, less than 40 → 26, less than 50 → 36, less than 60 → 40. Step 1: the rank of the median is total ÷ 2 = 40 ÷ 2 = 20. Step 2: find where the cumulative frequency first reaches 20: it is 14 below 30 and 26 below 40, so the median is in the class 30–. Step 3: use proportion. The 20th value is 20 − 14 = 6 values into the class, and the class holds 26 − 14 = 12 values, so it is 6/12 of the way along the class: median = 30 + 6/12 × 10 = 35. On the curve: draw a horizontal line at height 20 to the curve and go down to the axis, reading 35. Be careful: the rank 20 is a count, not an age; the median is the age 35.
Worked examples
Median of the ages: rank 20, class 30–40 (cumulative 14 to 26), median = 30 + (20 − 14) ÷ (26 − 14) × 10 = 30 + 5 = 35 years. The curve gives the same: from height 20 go across to the curve and down to 35.
Waiting times of 40 patients in the classes 0–, 10–, 20–, 30–, 40–50 minutes have frequencies 3, 5, 20, 8, 4, so the cumulative values are 0, 3, 8, 28, 36, 40. Rank = 20. It is first reached in the class 20– (8 to 28). Median = 20 + (20 − 8) ÷ (28 − 8) × 10 = 20 + 6 = 26 minutes.
For 50 values the rank is 50 ÷ 2 = 25. If the cumulative values are 18 below 20 and 32 below 30, the median is in the class 20–: 20 + (25 − 18) ÷ (32 − 18) × 10 = 20 + 5 = 25.
Class activity
Median on the curve. Draw the cumulative curve for your class survey from Lesson 1. Draw a horizontal line at half the total, go down to the axis and read the median. Check it with the proportion method.
Practice
1
A grouped table has 50 values. What is the rank of the median?
50 ÷ 2 = 25.
2
The cumulative values are 0, 4, 9, 21, 30 at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40. Find the median.
Rank 15; class 20–30 (9 to 21); 20 + 6 ÷ 12 × 10 = 25.
3
Classes 0–, 5–, 10–, 15–20 have frequencies 6, 9, 15, 10. In which class is the median?
Cumulative 6, 15, 30, 40; rank 20; the class 10–.
4
Read the median of the ages from the curve of this lesson.
35.
5
Dana says the median is 20 minutes because the rank is 20. What is wrong?
The rank is a count (the 20th value). The median is the value found for that rank, for example 26 minutes.
