Regular polygons: each interior and exterior angle, and the number of sides

Mathematics Prep 2 Term 1, Unit 3, Lesson 6
GoalFind each interior and exterior angle of a regular polygon, and find the number of sides from one angle.
New words
regular polygon · all sides equal and all angles equalexterior angle · the angle between one side and the extension of the next, one at each vertexinterior + exterior · at one vertex they add up to 180°number of sides n · found by solving an equation, and it must be a whole number
Explanation

In a regular polygon all n interior angles are equal, so each one is (n − 2) × 180° ÷ n. A regular pentagon has 540° ÷ 5 = 108° at each vertex. At each vertex the exterior angle is the angle made by turning the extended side to the next side, and the interior and exterior angles together make a straight line: 108° + 72° = 180°. In the picture the exterior angle is 72°. The exterior angles of a regular polygon are equal, and they add up to 360° (next lesson), so each one is 360° ÷ n. For n = 5: 360° ÷ 5 = 72° and 180° − 72° = 108°. This gives the quickest way to find n: if an exterior angle is 24°, then n = 360 ÷ 24 = 15. If an interior angle is 150°, the exterior angle is 30° and n = 360 ÷ 30 = 12. Check that n comes out whole: an interior angle of 100° would give 360 ÷ 80 = 4.5, which is impossible.

Worked examples
ABCDEF
A regular hexagon: each interior angle is (6 − 2) × 180° ÷ 6 = 720° ÷ 6 = 120°. Each exterior angle is 360° ÷ 6 = 60°, and 120° + 60° = 180°.
Each interior angle of a regular polygon is 150°. The exterior angle is 180° − 150° = 30°, so n = 360 ÷ 30 = 12 sides. Check: (12 − 2) × 180° ÷ 12 = 150°.
Each exterior angle of a regular polygon is 24°. Then n = 360 ÷ 24 = 15 sides and each interior angle is 180° − 24° = 156°. A tile maker wants a regular polygon with exterior angle 50°: 360 ÷ 50 = 7.2 is not a whole number, so no such regular polygon exists.
Class activity

Tiles. Look at floor tiles at home or at school. Which regular polygons tile a floor with no gaps (triangles, squares, hexagons)? Check with the interior angles: do whole numbers of the angle fill 360° around a point? (60° × 6, 90° × 4, 120° × 3.)
