Isotopes: the same element with different masses

Science Prep 1 Term 1, Unit 1: pp. 6–9
GoalExplain what isotopes are and why isotopes of one element behave alike chemically.
New words
isotopes · atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutronsprotium · hydrogen with no neutrondeuterium · hydrogen with one neutrontritium · hydrogen with two neutrons
Explanation

Atoms of one element always have the same number of protons, so the same Z. But they can have different numbers of neutrons. Such atoms are called isotopes: same Z, different A. Hydrogen has three isotopes. Protium has 1 proton and no neutron, deuterium has 1 proton and 1 neutron, and tritium has 1 proton and 2 neutrons. All three are hydrogen, with one electron each. Isotopes are not different elements. The chemical behaviour of an atom depends on its electrons, and isotopes of an element have the same number of electrons, so they behave alike in chemical changes. They differ in mass, because they differ in neutrons.

Carbon has isotopes ¹²₆C and ¹³₆C. Both have 6 protons, but ¹²₆C has 6 neutrons and ¹³₆C has 7. Same Z = 6, different A.
Are ¹⁴₆C and ¹⁴₇N isotopes? No. They have the same A = 14, but different Z (6 and 7), so they are two different elements: carbon and nitrogen.
Cl+172, 8, 7
Chlorine has isotopes with A = 35 and A = 37, both with Z = 17. The first has 18 neutrons and the second has 20. Each has 17 electrons arranged 2, 8, 7, so they act alike in chemical changes.
Class activity

Isotope cards. Make cards for the three isotopes of hydrogen with their Z, A, protons and neutrons. Mix them with cards for carbon-12 and carbon-13. Sort the cards into two piles, hydrogen and carbon, and say what is the same and what is different inside each pile. Research task: find one use of isotopes and tell the class.

Practice
1
What is the same and what is different in isotopes of one element?
2
How many neutrons does deuterium have?
3
Oxygen has isotopes with A = 16, 17 and 18 (Z = 8). How many neutrons does each have?
4
Why do isotopes of one element behave alike in chemical changes?
