Inside the atom: nucleus, protons, neutrons, electrons

Science Prep 1 Term 1, Unit 1: pp. 1–5
GoalName the three particles in an atom, say where each one is, and give its charge.
New words
nucleus · the tiny, dense centre of the atom, made of protons and neutronsproton · a particle in the nucleus with a charge of +1neutron · a particle in the nucleus with no chargeelectron · a very light particle with a charge of −1 that moves around the nucleus
Explanation

Ernest Rutherford, a physicist born in New Zealand (1871–1937), did experiments in the early 1900s that showed the atom has a tiny, dense, positive centre: the nucleus. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. The nucleus holds protons (charge +1) and neutrons (charge 0). Electrons (charge −1) move around the nucleus. A proton and a neutron each have a mass of about 1 u, a tiny unit made for atoms, while an electron has only about 1/1836 u. So almost all the mass of an atom is in its nucleus. The nucleus is also very small: if the atom were a huge sports field, the nucleus would be like a pinhead in the middle, and the electrons would move around in the space of the whole field. An atom is neutral because it has equal numbers of positive protons and negative electrons.

Here are the three particles side by side.
He+22
A helium atom has 2 protons, 2 neutrons and 2 electrons. The protons give +2 and the electrons give −2, so the total charge is 0. The atom is neutral.
Why is nearly all the mass in the nucleus? One electron is only about 1/1836 of a proton, so even 1000 electrons together are lighter than a single proton.
Class activity

Charge cards. Make 8 small cards marked + (protons) and 8 marked − (electrons). A neutral atom needs the same number of + cards and − cards. Choose 5 + cards: how many − cards make the atom neutral? Try it again with 8 + cards. Then take away one − card and say what the total charge is.

Practice
1
Which two particles are in the nucleus?
2
An atom has 9 protons. How many electrons does the neutral atom have?
3
An atom has 6 protons and 6 electrons. What is its total charge?
4
Why do we say the nucleus holds almost all the mass of the atom?
